Community

15th May 2025

This week marks Mental Health Awareness Week (12–18 May), and this year’s theme is Community.

As highlighted by the Mental Health Foundation, being part of a safe, positive community is vital for our mental health and wellbeing.

In our roles within Adult & Community Learning, we have the unique opportunity to foster environments where both learners and staff feel connected and supported. Here are some ideas to bring the spirit of community into our classrooms over the coming weeks/season and ideas for some personal practices:

In the Classroom: Building Connections

  1. Community Circles: Begin sessions with a circle where each learner shares something positive or a gratitude. This promotes inclusivity and mutual respect. (Resource)
  2. Collaborative Projects: Encourage group activities that require cooperation, such as community-themed art projects or group discussions on local issues. (Resource)
  3. Peer Support Pairing: Pair learners to support each other academically and emotionally, fostering peer-to-peer connections. (Resource)

For Staff: Nurturing Our Wellbeing

  1. Mindful Moments: Take short breaks during the day for mindfulness or deep-breathing exercises to reduce stress. (Mind: Mindfulness exercises and tips)
  2. Peer Check-Ins: Schedule an informal chat with colleagues to share experiences and offer mutual support. (Maybe pop to a park/green space for lunch – don’t forget your sunscreen and shades!)
  3. Professional Development: Engage in workshops or training focused on mental health to enhance your understanding and skills. (BCC Learning Hub) (Free Courses @ Free Courses in England/DofE)
